| The PRA Center was established in Fiscal Year 2002-2003 from a federal grant received by Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC). In recent years, the risk assessment community has recognized the benefits of PRA as a tool for characterizing variability and uncertainty in risks, thereby, providing more information to environmental regulators responsible for safeguarding health of human and ecological populations, while balancing multiple social and economic concerns. A primary objective of the PRA Center is to establish a bridge to environmental programs in government, industry, and academia that will benefit from PRA by receiving technical training, developing new initiatives, or by developing partnerships to advance ongoing projects. In addition, the PRA Center will facilitate educational outreach to stakeholders that are involved in or affected by risk management decisions. Outcomes from the PRA Center projects will include new probabilistic models and statistical software tools, internet-searchable databases, scientific publications, and educational outreach programs. A diverse array of projects are underway. The current focus is on advancing applications of probabilistic modeling to human and ecological risk assessment and risk management. However, probabilistic models have applications beyond risk assessment. The PRA Center will draw upon the wealth of scientific and engineering expertise in Central New York including toxicology, chemistry, statistics, hydrology, and environmental engineering. Uncertainty analysis and decision analysis tools are needed to address a wide range of environmental problems including reclaiming brownfields, evaluating alternative water treatment technologies, and designing buildings with green technologies. The PRA Center has been funded since 2002 by the following federal grants: R-83034501-0, CR-83109201-0, and X-83172401-0. |
